Index of Japanese Names

Index of Japanese Names

Names of the higher bakufu officials are in principle listed according to the name given in the Shintei Kansei chōshū shokafu

新訂寛政重修諸家譜. As the names in the Japanese sources are only given in kanji, the reading is not conclusive, but we have chosen the reading closest to the original Dutch rendering as given in the dagregisters.

Information on the Nagasaki burgemeesters has been taken from the Nagasaki meika ryakufu 長崎名家略譜 in the Zōho Nagasaki ryakushi 増補長崎略史, with some exceptions. The personal names of the burgemeesters are given according to the most current (kun) reading.

Regarding given names ending with -兵衛 that have been identified, we have followed the usage of the previous volumes and have transliterated these kanji as –hei or –bei, and as –hyōe or –byōe in those cases where the original Dutch rendering came closer to this reading.

Unidentified names have been left in the original Dutch spelling.

N.B. Lords who are mentioned merely as “Lord of […]” in the text without their personal names have been identified in this index (see Lord); their names are given between square brackets.
