Abstract

Drawing from a set of interviews with professionals involved in custody assessment in Cape Town, South Africa, the authors describe the multi-facetted working relations that evolve around the regional Family Advocate’s Office. Work load and multidisciplinary approaches for custody assessment make it indispensable for the Office’s staff (Family Advocates and Family Counsellors) to consult with outside private caring professionals, i.e. psychologists, psychiatrists and private social workers. In the best interests of the child, a release of government funds for these contracted services is called for as well as engagement by dedicated caring professionals. The article illustrates the dependence of the judiciary on non-judicial personnel.
