Abstract

Cultural brokerage is a significant element in Jewish history. The Diaspora communities lived within a society that saw them as the religious other. Jewish leadership therefore was compelled to relate to the political and cultural elite of the surrounding society, as well as to Jewish notables in other regions. Due to lack of evidence, only very few cultural brokers from Byzantine Jewish communities are known to us in person. Nevertheless, it is possible to trace influences and mutual relationships between the geographical regions called Byzantium and Ashkenaz in the Middle Ages by referring to elements of cultural transfer. Byzantine influence can be shown in Ashkenazic culture and literature between the 10th and the 13th century. However, Ashkenazic elements are rarely found in Byzantine Jewish testimonies before the Fourth Crusade. It was only after that event that Ashkenazic scholars went to the Byzantine empire and left their imprint that is recognizable today.
