Abstract

Whatever our prejudice as to monastic inertia may presume, monks travelled a lot during the medieval period, above all inside a Mediterranean space that remained a connected world despite post-Roman fragmentation and Islamic political construction. In this way monks and, especially, Byzantine monks, served as cultural brokers between the Byzantine and the Western worlds. This chapter aims at defining and specifying the modalities and limits of such a function. It explores the role of Byzantine southern Italy as a specific space for these interactions, demonstrates the continuous obsession in Rome for Byzantine pilgrim monks, and offers a nuanced and critical interpretation of the influence that these Byzantine monks would have had on the Latin world.
