Abstract

In the late sixteenth century the second person singular form YOU was increasingly becoming the ‘neutral’ pronoun of address while THOU was developing into the ‘marked’ (in the sense of ‘deviant’) form used primarily to express a speaker’s emotion or social superiority. Much research into the use of YOU and THOU in the Early Modem English period has focussed on the works of Shakespeare. This corpus-based study instead investigates pronoun usage in both Elizabethan drama and records of authentic dialogue taken from court depositions. A comparison is made between these two text categories in order to illustrate how pronoun usage differs in constructed and authentic dialogue respectively. The results show that the different purposes behind the writing of the drama and deposition texts influence pronoun selection. Furthermore, this paper shows that a speaker's gender also plays a role in determining the choice of pronoun. It is suggested that this is due to the avoidance of the ‘marked’ THOU form by women, who prefer the ‘safer’ pronoun YOU. The pronoun YOU is found to be employed in several cases where THOU would be predicted by Brown and Gilman ( I989).
