This is a corpus-based study of noun phrases in three contextually related text types: British tourist brochures, British travel guides, and articles taken from The Sunday Times Travel Supplement Previous studies have shown that the noun phrase is highly sensitive to register variation. The aim of this study is to investigate variation in the complexity of the noun phrase across the three text categories. My hypothesis is that the different communicative purposes of the three text types are reflected in the structure of the noun phrase. The results show that The Sunday Times articles have fewer NPs per 1,000 words compared to the other two text types. Furthermore, three different measurements of NP complexity show that NPs in the travel articles are generally less complex compared to the other two text types.
