Abstract

Given the fragile fiscal situation since 2010, the Greek social security pension system has undergone numerous structural reforms in an attempt to safeguard its sustainability. The aim of this chapter is to analyze the pension system in Greece in terms of its structural development and changes since the reforms introduced in the last decade. What was once a multi-fund and multi-tier system with numerous rules determining pension benefits and eligibility for them has become a system that operates with the same rules for all and provides main and auxiliary pension benefits from two separate funds that operate on the basis of clearly specified rules. Statistical data will be used to present the challenges the system is facing in terms of fiscal sustainability and its ability to provide adequate pensions in the long term. The research has shown that long-term sustainability of the system seems attainable, but there are certain parameters that should be carefully monitored and reviewed to meet the needs of all the insured.
