Abstract

For a 56-year periodâfrom the publication of Josef Schmidâs landmark Studien zur Geschichte des griechischen Apokalypse-Textes, 2: Die Alten StÃ¤mme in 1956 until 2012âit was widely held that the Apocalypseâs textual tradition branched off into four major text types and that each of them could be dated to the fourth century. But for a single voice of dissent from E.C.Â Colwell, who questioned the fourth century dating of the Apocalypseâs Andreas tradition, the position appeared unassailable and Colwellâs reservations were forgotten. Colwell himself never had the opportunity to follow-up. In 2012, however, Schmidâs data received a careful review and a serious error was uncovered that reopened the dating question and demonstrated that Colwellâs concerns were well-founded, though not for the reasons he thought. HernÃ¡ndezâs contribution takes the reader through the original process of discovery and chronicles the developments that followed.
