While textual scholars are correct in moving from a quest for the “original text” to a quest for the Ausgangstext, this chapter argues that publications and presentations about textual criticism should not translate the German term into the English “initial text.” This informal survey demonstrates that when a non-TC trained biblical scholar encounters the English terminology, the scholar is likely to assume that “original text” and “initial text” are identical in meaning, and thus miss the reason this concept has been adopted in the first place. Indeed, biblical scholars with text-critical training, but who are not up to date with recent developments in New Testament textual criticism, are even more likely to assume that they understand the meaning of “initial text,” and thereby misunderstand.
