Abstract

This essay shows that lectio brevior is often used by proponents of the Q theory to demonstrate alternating primitivity: places where at times Matthew seems to contain the most original tradition and Luke at others. Such scholars often show that if, for example, Luke is shorter in a pericope like Luke 6:20 (“Blessed are you who are poor”), then Luke is likely the most original source of that pericope and therefore Luke cannot be borrowing from Matthew—thus disproving the Farrer theory that Matthew used Mark and that Luke used Mark and Matthew. But Royse argued against lectio brevior and many studies since Royse have upheld his findings. We conclude that scholars should be more careful using lectio brevior and that an appeal to the number of words in a pericope is overly simplistic and lacks nuance.
