Abstract

One of the four ‘Great Uncials’, Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus is one of the most important early Greek witnesses to the text of the New Testament. In particular, it has featured prominently in text-historical research into the Book of Revelation, most notably in the work of Josef Schmid. Being a palimpsest, however, Ephraemi’s wording exhibits an inherent measure of uncertainty, as evinced by Robert W. Lyon’s extensive corrections to Constantin Tischendorf’s editio princeps. The recently produced multi-spectral images open up a new opportunity to put this codex under closer scrutiny. As a first step in this direction, the present essay aims to revisit all Lyon’s corrections to Tischendorf, providing analytical comments on and images of each of the variant readings under consideration.
