Abstract

This chapter consists of a keynote address delivered by Professor Yuli Tamir in Haifa at the 2018 Summit meeting of the University Social Responsibility Network (see Chapter 4). The theme of the Conference was ‘Shaping a future of critical hope’. Professor Tamir’s contribution, as the subtitle of her chapter indicates, is that striving for a realistic utopia involves dealing with what she calls ‘the bleak side of diversity’. ‘Finding ways of living together’, she says, ‘is not about overcoming disagreements, it is about dealing with the negative feelings created by disagreement’.
