Abstract

Survey trend evidence indicates that job control power of those in different professional classes has become more polarised. Professional employees have been losing technical autonomy over design of their jobs as well as experiencing diminishing roles in organisational decision-making. Implications of declining job control, increasing underemployment and diminished learning opportunities for professional employees are considered. The case studies of engineers and nurses demonstrate that even among self-regulating professional employees there are now serious organisational pressures on their autonomy, authority, skill use and learning as well as on ethical norms of professionalism. The need for further comparative analyses of professions in general and professional classes in particular on key issues is noted, as well as effects of technological change, the intersection of class, race, and gender, differences between private and public sector professionals, and experiences of new cohorts of professionals. The bottom line is that professional employees clearly face declining job control and diminishing use of their skills.
