Abstract

This chapter introduces a previously ignored critical framework for understanding professionals and their working conditions in advanced capitalist economies. Professionals are identified in terms of their different employment class positions: professional employers, self-employed professionals, professional managers and non-managerial professional employees, as well as by their extent of self-regulating status. This framework is used throughout the book to assess differences and trends in job control, skill utilisation and continuing learning among professional classes. There is an initial discussion of key concepts including professional power, underemployment, professional learning, as well as introductory comparisons between engineers and nurses. The basic data sources are introduced, including national labour force surveys in 1982, 1998, 2004, 2010 and 2016, as well as 2017 surveys and interviews of engineers and nurses. Further survey and case study chapters are outlined.
