Abstract

Chapter 6 (A Fictitious Identity: The Market for Masters with Provisional Names) analyses the market reception of provisional names, which are proven to be efficient substitutes for the artist’s name in the trade of art. They perform better globally than historic names do, regardless of the fact that they do not indicate much about the artist himself. Several pricing characteristics that significantly affect the market value of these paintings are detected: the creator’s name (especially Friedländer); the long-term recognition of the name; its market visibility; and its typology.
