Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the correlation between poverty and illicit drug use among young people in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria. Hence, the role of poverty as an underlying factor that predisposes many youths to illicit drug use and trafficking is merely stated without sufficient empirical and theoretical scrutiny in the extant Nigeria literature. This essay examines the contribution of poverty to youth involvement in drug trafficking in Nigeria. It discussed two indicators of poverty in its objectives: the relationship between youth unemployment, low family income and their involvement in illicit drug use. The chapter is anchored on Relative Deprivation Theory for the theoretical discussion of the issues of drug use and poverty. It adopts cross-sectional research methods as well as combined both quantitative and qualitative research methods while using both questionnaires and In-depth Interview (IDIs) guides as its research instruments. The recommendation is that efforts have to be made so as to help in addressing the problem of drug use among youths in Lagos: (1) the government, by providing gainful employment opportunities for the youths in the country, and finding ways to raise workers' income to a level commensurable with the economic realities of the country; (2) social, workers, youth workers, school counselors, by offering professional and youth friendly counselling services for young secondary school children abusing all forms of substance in Lagos.
