Abstract

Youths in Nigeria are today confronted by the systemic barrier of age which has limited their active participation in politics as electoral candidates. This barrier is borne out of the long years of military rule and the efforts of the ruling class to halt any intrusion into its class especially by members of the younger generation. The Nigerian youth population display political apathy because they feel excluded from the political institutions where resources are authoritatively allocated. A recent development in Nigeriaâs political system, the âNot too Young to Runâ Act, however seeks to reverse this trend by widening the political space for youth participation. This chapter examines the challenges of youth exclusion in Nigeria as well as the potentials of this law in reversing the systemic marginalization of youths in politics and engendering leadership succession in the country. The conclusion of this paper is that while this law is a welcome development in terms of expanding the space for political participation and consolidating the countryâs democracy, it holds a minute potential for incorporating Nigerian youths into active politics in the country. The prebendal nature of Nigeriaâs political system where political power is competed for and acquired largely through the distribution of pecuniary resources to political patrons represents a greater obstacle to the active participation of youths in Nigeriaâs politics.
