Abstract

Most discussions of populism in Malaysia focus on the parallels between the actions of nativist right-wing parties in Europe and the ethno-nationalist actions of the United Malays National Organization (umno) but lack a widely agreed definition. This chapter seeks to examine populist tendencies and political discourse in Malaysia and to look at which issues may be defined as populist in Malaysia. It finds that Malaysians care about immigration control, governance, unemployment, crime and violence, and inflation. Yet with the increased perception of the Pakatan Harapan administration failing to bring down prices of goods and with Malay-Muslim rights being threatened, opposition parties such as the Islamic Party of Malaysia and umno may be encouraged to adopt a more populist stance, which could be combined with political Islam and Malay nativist sentiments. Given that this strategy could have benefitted the opposition parties, there may be more incentives for political parties in the future to fractionalize the diverse society in Malaysia for short-term political gains. Yet this then raises the questions of how “people” should be defined and why “people” adopt nativist, populist views—questions that need to be answered for a better understanding of how the global populist phenomenon has adapted to the Malaysian political climate.
