Abstract

Capitalizing on a unique, but long-neglected documentâthe Protestant polemicist Williamâs Fulke serial bibliographies of known English Catholic imprints of the 1560s and 1570s in the English vernacularâEarle Havens offers up a rich and contextualized perspective of English Catholic print culture prior to the arrival of the Jesuit mission to England (1580â81). The titles listed there (alongside the titles of their Protestant rebuttals), as well as the omission of numerous others, enrich our understanding of the vigorous tit-for-tat polemical exchange of those earlier decades, and nascent Protestant anxiety over the subversive potential of increasing numbers of English Catholic liturgical and devotional works in print.
