Abstract

This article analyses the crucial importance of honor and self-love as fundamental bases of sociability in the thought of the philosopher Pierre Bayle. To analyze these notions, it also questions the importance of these affects in Bayle's anthropology. It shows the importance of honor and self-esteem as drivers of human actions and their direct relationship with pleasure. Honor and self-esteem are the pillars on which social constructions are based, they are also capable of modulating collective behaviors and imposing certain forms of action in society. They can modulate different forms and types of society, and this is proven with the examples of the society of atheists or the tolerant society. The article considers the characterization of passions as vices or virtues in this regard. It shows the contradictions and limits that pose this reflection in Bayle, where theological, anthropological and social considerations are mixed. Apart from the classic opposition between the Augustinian condemnation of sinful man and the social utility of passions, considering passions in different possible social models shows, without denying Baylian adherence to certain general moral principles, their variable character as vices or virtues within diverse societies conducted by different rules.
