Abstract

The coexistence and synergy of the physical object and the inscribed verse was a common facet of daily life in Byzantium. From monumental architecture to pieces of jewellery, seals, and even coins, a range of Byzantine objects bore metrical inscriptions, or epigrams. This chapter introduces the reader to the basic characteristics of Byzantine epigrams, as well as to the significance and perception of these texts in Byzantine culture. Special consideration is given to the performative dimension of the inscribed verse. The chapter, in addition, surveys different forms of interaction between text, object, and beholder, showing how epigrams could be mobilized to variously enhance the monuments and artefacts to which they were attached, and to frame and mediate the beholder’s response. Attention is also paid to the visual aspect and materiality of epigrams, their capacity to produce aesthetic effects and communicate beyond simply conveying linguistically coded information.
