This paper discusses: the relation between text and context; attempts to define what a text is in the eyes of the Byzantines; offers information on con-texts (the relation with other texts in poetry books, small sylloges, anthologies, and miscellanies); discusses the reuse of texts in new contexts; and offers a number of contextual readings of texts performed at court, produced for personal devotion, or aimed at fellow intellectuals.
