Abstract

The present article examines the application that Bergson, one of the most famous philosophers in his time, operates by projecting his own doctrine on biological evolution. From this application, Bergson draws a precise distinction formulated in LâÃvolution crÃ©atrice (1907): namely the distinction between the âhÃ©rÃ©ditÃ© du caractÃ¨reâ / âhereditability of characterâ, which neo-Lamarckism wouldâwrongly, as Bergson arguesâhave liked to regard as the major explication of evolution, and the âhÃ©rÃ©ditÃ© de lâÃ©cartâ / âhereditability of deviationâ, that is to say the deviation in general, which only comes into play in the so-called cases of heredity of the acquired. Now, this distinction has a literary anticipation, which is as interesting as it is surprising: it can be seen in the functioning of the theories on heredity in the works of Ãmile Zola; Gilles Deleuze, employing Bergsonian categories in order to read the Rougon-Macquart, didnât miss this point.
