Abstract

Examples and definitions of virtuosity usually assume a male paradigm. Were there nevertheless also female virtuosos? This article examines the gallant poet Aurora von KÃ¶nigsmarck as a possible case of female virtuosity around 1700. On the one hand, it deals with attributions in encyclopedias of the 18th and 19th century, in which Aurora is described with qualities attributed to virtuosos or even explicitly called a virtuosa. On the other hand, the relationship between gallantry and virtuosity is explored through their common reference point in the concept of sprezzatura. It is shown that for female virtuosity the proximity to music and thus (apparently) improvised singable poetry played an important role. In addition, it becomes clear that one function of female virtuosity could be the improvement of oneâs own position in court society.
