Abstract

The essay interprets Brockesâ poem âThe Firmamentâ as a virtuoso balancing act between the traditional knowledge of a fixed firmament, as evoked in the Sirach quotation above the text, and the new knowledge that opens the view into a universe whose sea-like, unexplored depths engulf the ego, while they also open up inside the self. Through close reading, the typographical and formal representation of the text on paper is interwoven with the analysis of the textâs content. This reveals the juxtaposition and interweaving of the human ideas of God, creation, nature and man with the omnipresence of God as the main theme of the poem.
