Abstract

From a viewpoint of philosophical aesthetics, this chapter addresses Aesthetics of Religion as a discipline of Religious Studies. The starting point of the discussion is the question of the naming of the discipline and its self-description in the detachment from the phenomenology of religion. Hans Gerald HÃ¶dlâs call that Religious Studies is first and foremost about numbers, data, and facts, as well as his attention to semiotic and symbol-theoretical questions, are subsequently given particular attention. From a broader (philosophical) understanding of aesthetics, I conclude by asking whether the topic of beauty (understood in the sense of Alexander Baumgarten and Immanuel Kant) and the reflection on contemporary art (also as so-called post-autonomous art) could find a stronger echo in the discipline.

Abstract

Dieser Beitrag wendet sich von einem Standpunkt philosophischer Ãsthetik der ReligionsÃ¤sthetik als einer Disziplin der Religionswissenschaft zu. Der Einstiegspunkt in die Diskussion ist die Frage der Namensgebung der Disziplin und ihre Selbstbeschreibung in der AblÃ¶sung von der ReligionsphÃ¤nomenologie. Besondere Beachtung finden in weiterer Folge Hans Gerald HÃ¶dls Aufruf, in der Religionswissenschaft gehe es zuerst um numbers, data, and facts, sowie seine Aufmerksamkeit fÃ¼r semiotische und symboltheoretische Fragen. Aus einem breiteren (philosophischen) VerstÃ¤ndnis von Ãsthetik frage ich abschlieÃend, ob nicht auch das Moment der SchÃ¶nheit (im Sinne Alexander Baumgartens und Immanuel Kants verstanden) sowie die Reflexion auf die Kunst der Gegenwart (auch als sogenannte postautonome Kunst) einen stÃ¤rkeren Widerhall in der Disziplin finden kÃ¶nnten.
