Abstract

This chapter presents a qualitative approach to football fandom as an object of research in Religious Studies. Building on my empirical research on Viennese football fans, I present analytical and methodological approaches suitable to address the question of religious elements in football fandom. The research process is discussed and results are presented. A special focus is put on the theoretical elements behind the methodological approach, such as their role in the process of coding, the necessary self-reflection within the research process, and the conscious handling of qualitative research as an interpretative tool. By doing so, this chapter aims to portray an empirical research process in Religious Studies dealing with one of the discipline’s core questions, namely, the application of attempts to define “religion.”
