This essay rehearses the evidence for the existence of household groups of Christ believers, critically engaging recent efforts to question this understanding of the organization of the ekklēsia. Then, the essay argues that the household ekklēsiai of Christ believers at Corinth find their closest analogues in Greek and Roman cultic associations which consisted of family members and others within the family network – associations which usually assembled in the houses of their founders and patrons. Finally, the essay seeks to draw out the implications of this analogy for an understanding of the conflicts between Christ believers evident in the pages of Paul’s correspondence with Corinth.
