Abstract

Drawing on a range of documentary papyrological evidence, this article explores the context, nature, expectations and features of relaying news or accounts of birth in Roman antiquity, and then applies these insights for better understanding the contemporary historical, social, and linguistic context of the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke. After surveying recent methodological arguments on the legitimacy of employing Egyptian papyri as evidence for broader Mediterranean cultural phenomena, we turn our attention to the declarations of birth, noting distinctions between those in Arsinoites, Antinoopolis, and Oxyrhynchus. Further to this, private letters deepen our understanding of birth in the ancient world, especially how fraught with danger it was for mother and child. Implications for the Matthean and Lukan infancy narratives are explored along three lines of enquiry: 1) social setting, 2) specificity of included detail type, and 3) the modified function of birth stories across Greco-Roman traditions and the gospels.
