To regain self-assurance is the only and effective way to terminate the potential of being victimised and maximize the power of forgiveness. Forgiveness only works when we first concentrate on the mind in a positive way and then reject to be harassed and tortured by the memories of being victimised at any moment. This is what Isabel Archer does in Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady. Isabel does not choose to take revenge on Madame Merle and Gilbert Osmond who flatter and mislead her to a wrong marriage. Nor does she intend to forgive them because her forgiveness is useless to their wickedness as well as her suffering. But she chooses to forgive herself and recovers her confidence by admitting her false views on them. Isabel’s willingness of facing her mistakes and returning to Rome has proven that she ultimately transforms herself into a real lady with affirmation and freedom. For Isabel, marriage is no longer smooth and happy if there is more than love and consideration. However, her experience in this improper marriage can be a catalyst that forces her to not only accept her shortcomings but also forgive human nature which is imperfect, complex and paradoxical.
