This chapter explores the challenge posed by Ricoeur’s exploration of the link between the politics of mutual recognition and forgiveness, to Honneth’s critical theory of recognition. Forgiveness is not part of Honneth’s lexicon, although I argue that it should be. However, any attempt to incorporate forgiveness into Honneth’s theory runs into difficulties with the respect the architectonics of his theory. Honneth gives little explicit consideration to the possible asymmetry of acts of recognition, the temporality of recognition, particularly its relationship to the past, nor how the struggle for recognition may be pacified. By contrast, in his exploration of the course of recognition, Ricoeur provides a means to address the aforementioned factors which simultaneously links recognition to forgiveness. For Ricoeur forgiveness resonates existentially, with respect an acceptance of human finitude and frailty, and politically through the transformation of social relations of enmity. Importantly it allows for recognition in conditions of asymmetry, without obliterating our experience of human plurality. Thus Ricoeur’s discussion of forgiveness helps to extend the application of Honneth’s theory and reconfigure its aporias. Nonetheless, and drawing on Hannah Arendt, he insists that forgiveness itself is apolitical. By contrast this essay explores the possibility that forgiveness does not simply promise to resolve the struggle for recognition, it makes the politics of recognition possible.
