Although childhood is a central theme in the world’s religions, and although children play significant roles in religious communities, until recently little scholarly attention has been given to religious conceptions of children and obligations to them. The aim of this paper is to contribute both to comparative research in religious studies and to interdisciplinary research on childhood by introducing some of the significant and varied conceptions of children and obligations to them within two religious traditions: Judaism and Christianity. Although Jews and Christians have sometimes expressed narrow perspectives on children, the paper argues that both religious traditions provide multifaceted perspectives on children that include attention to their strengths as well as vulnerabilities; their wisdom as well as their need for instruction and guidance. In addition, these two traditions outline a number of obligations not only to one’s own children but also to children in need, and they address duties and responsibilities of children themselves. By focusing on religious understandings of children within these two traditions, the paper illustrates the amazing array ideas about children within and across religious traditions and prompts all readers - whatever our religious commitments - to re-examine our own preconceptions about children and our shared obligations to them.
