Daniel Defoeâs Robinson Crusoe (1719) is not an erotic text in any common understanding of the word, but at its basis it develops a masculine subject identity linked to the domination of that which is scripted as feminine and, as such, has a great deal to do with erotics, with the gendering and sexualization of power. This chapter investigates the sexualized and gendered representations of things and land as they are tied to domination and to the erotics of self, possession, and enclosure in Robinson Crusoe. Crusoeâs masculine sexuality is modeled on a system that insists that physical domination of the Other is both pleasurable and necessary to achieving a Self.
