The late-medieval period fostered the collapse of scholasticism, whose theological ruins still coloured the terminology and mystic practices of early-modern Christians. Lady Mildmayâs spiritual meditations, represents one of the manifold conceptions that surfaced concerning what Christian âfaithfulnessâ implied. Yet as a Tudor aristocrat, hers was a time when the active presence of God was no longer delineable (via allegoria facti) within creation. God had been âlostâ (de Certeau). I argue that her autobiographical meditations both give voice to a longing for this âlostâ God and, by allowing a space for desire in the divine-human relation, resist the Calvinist doctrine of a âclosedâ elect. More specifically, in portions of her meditations, Mildmay performs biblical exegesis as an erotic mode of response to Christ, who is revealed as desirously calling her from within the biblical text. The passages she interprets come from the Old Testament sexual epithalamium, the Canticum Canticorum. Her seeming adherence to the earlier tradition of reading these passages as an allegory for the intimate love between Christ and the âfeminineâ Church and/or individual soul involves a unique factor: Mildmay, unlike medieval exegetes, is a woman. I explore the implications of this by posing several fruitful questions.
