Youth long for connection. Yet, they sometimes make destructive choices in this natural quest to hook up with themselves, others, and/or something greater than themselves. Adolescents are hard wired for transcendent experiences that bring them into union in any number of ways. They are by nature devotional, seeking direct and intimate relationship with the Divine.1 Sex is one legal way for young people to attempt fulfil this natural longing for union. Many of the ways that sexuality is expressed in the youth culture around the world do not actually fulfil this basic need. In response to this, I have developed a dance-based rites of passage process for diverse youth who do not necessarily have religious roots, yet who are moved to transform from extreme states of disconnection into life-giving states of connection, with self, other, and Spirit. In this chapter, I will expose living questions related to sexuality and intimacy burning in the hearts and bodies of young people from around the world, along with describing pathways for their healing and eventual awakening into integrated expressions of their emerging sexual identities. Included will be stories of actual youth describing outcomes of their journeys through Surfing the Creative®, our body-centred transformational process.
