Abstract

Japanâs rivers are characterized by rapid flow and heavy sediment loads, which pose challenges even for experienced river engineers. Accurately understanding and controlling both water and sediment flows are inherently complex tasks. In addition, Japanâs diverse topography and climate make it difficult to develop universal river engineering techniques that can be applied nationwide. Over the past 150 years, modern river control technologies have made significant advances. However, traditional river management practices based on craftsmanship and empirical knowledge remain important. These practices are often specific to place and time, reflecting the unique conditions of each area. Engineers must understand and predict the dynamic behavior of rivers in order to effectively implement appropriate changes. However, local communities that have lived alongside these rivers for generations often have a deeper understanding of the human-river relationship. Therefore, effective river management in Japan requires a comprehensive approach. It is essential to combine advanced numerical river engineering techniques with the rich experiential knowledge of local communities. This integrated approach allows for more sustainable and effective management strategies that respect both the natural environment and the needs of the people who depend on these vital waterways. By combining modern and traditional methods, river management can achieve a balance that benefits both nature and society.
