Abstract

“Making Kin,” a concept introduced by Donna Haraway in 2016, offers a novel way to rethink human-nature relationships in responding to the complex ecological crises in human dominant influence era known as the Anthropocene. Using the local realities in the Chiang Khong district in northernmost Thailand, the Mekong River serves as transboundary water resources and the natural border between Thailand and Laos in the Lower Mekong Basin. The river is the home of the aquatic ecosystem where the critically endangered giant Mekong catfish migrate to spawn in the river in the ancestral Baan Had Krai community lands. However, Chiang Khong district is also the center stage of China’s Belt and Road Initiative’s (BRI) investments in global infrastructure development strategy. Nearby Chiang Khong, the first operating hydropower energy project constructed in northwest Laos, the Xayaburi dam, has worsened the environmental consequences, including the loss of flood pulses, floodplain habitat, wetlands, and sediment transport crucial to support the ecological relations. With a focus on the Chiang Khong people and the giant Mekong catfish, this paper explores the potential application of relational thinking in “Making Kin” that recognizes interdependencies of human and nature in a web of relationships encapsulating a narrative of natureculture that move beyond a human-centric view.
