Abstract

This chapter discusses the position of the SÃ¡mi language in upper secondary education through the concepts of linguistic landscape. I introduce school ethnography as a method to study language practices in Indigenous education. The target school is the SÃ¡mi upper secondary educational institution in Guovdageaidnu, Norway. Exploring the position of SÃ¡mi language in the SÃ¡mi upper secondary education gives a new view into the language policy within the field of Indigenous education. The chapter presents how ethnography methodology can be used in the research of Indigenous education. It explores the linguistic practices at a schools and reveals how they can affect the experience of schools as linguistic arenas and identity builders. It also shows how the status of the SÃ¡mi language at institutional level reflects the national and local language policy.
