Abstract

The expression âtraditional SÃ¡mi noaidi drumsâ (or shamanic drums) usually refers to the 71 drums listed in Ernst Mankerâs (1893â1972) monumental work Die lappische Zaubertrommel IâII (1938, 1950), plus one found by Hans-Joachim Paproth in Mannheim Museum.¹ All these drums originate latest from 17th and 18th century. They were made and used by SÃ¡mi shamans, noaidis.

There are, or have been, however, two more traditional drums that are probably from the 19th century, both from the Norwegian side of SÃ¡pmi. They are known as the Bindalen drum and the Velfjord drum. Only the former has survived but about the latter one there exists a detailed verbal and visual description given by an eyewitness. Both are discussed and analyzed in this article.

The third drum that I am discussing and analyzing is from the 20th century. It is less traditional in appearance â however, by no means a neo-shamanic one² â but according to the background information linked to it the drum it was used for traditional purposes, i.e. to assure hunting and fishing luck etc.

Most of the background information concerning drums and presented in this chapter stems from Manker 1938 and 1950 (in German), and Christoffersson 2009 (in Swedish). Concerning SÃ¡mi pre-Christian religion more information will be found e.g. PentikÃ¤inen â Pulkkinen 2018 (in Finnish), PentikÃ¤inen 1997 (in German) and Kulonen â Pulkkinen â SeurujÃ¤rvi (eds.) 2005 (in English).
