Abstract

Lars Levi LÃ¦stadius (1800â1861) is one of the outstanding figures of Nordic history in the 19th century whatever one may think about his own views and the movement that bears his name. This is notably the case as far as his scholarly work is concerned, acknowledged by the French authorities in his day with the LÃ©gion dâhonneur order. However, it is in recent times only, that we have also become more eminently aware of the importance of his writings about the SÃ¡mi, with the publication of his Fragments of Lappish Mythology in Swedish (1997) and English translation (2002). No wonder then, that this exceptional figure has invited comment time and again though representations of him in other languages than the Nordic tongues seem to have been barely studied at all. This is at least the case as far as writings in French and German are concerned which this chapter focuses on principally.
