Abstract

Creating opportunities for African researchers to flourish in global research partnerships and collaboration will bridge the gap in research capacity and infrastructure that prevents Africa from addressing the underlying issues that contribute to its appalling levels of poverty and unemployment. Given the insufficient resources allocated to research and development (R&D) in Africa and the critical role that scientific knowledge produced by research activities can play in the development of world economies, global research partnerships may provide a means of enhancing scientific capacities across the continent. Underpinned by the collaboration theory, the current study was driven by a recognition that the work of Sub-Saharan African researchers is often undervalued in national, regional, and international debates, thus making collaboration problematic. Given this context, we asked the question: How may global research partnerships contribute to forging socially just research partnerships in Sub-Saharan African countries? The findings demonstrate that recognizing researcher capacity and inclusion are the two factors that impact equitable and socially just research partnerships in Sub-Saharan African countries. The study suggests a revolutionary transformative collaborative research framework that outlines more inclusive practices and standards for advancing research equity and giving African researchers authority over international studies carried out in Sub-Saharan African countries.
