Abstract

An academic career is often associated with one’s individual achievements over an extended period. Invariably, giving an account of one’s academic development over many years does not occur without reflecting on what would have assisted if one were to commence one’s academic career and many of the constraints one would have encountered in the pursuit of cultivating one’s career. Considering that in this contribution I must reflect on my lifeworld as an early career scholar, one is instantly confronted by educational matters that enhanced the authenticity of academic research and well-being. In this contribution, I offer a narrative on my own academic development as a scholar by drawing on insights about my scholarly experiences over the last three decades in higher education, most specifically in the field of African philosophy of higher education. I identify three touchstones according to which early career scholarship ought to be looked at and show, firstly, how a citizenship of scholarship can be considered as constitutive of academic well-being. Secondly, I argue why deliberative iterations remain significant in the pursuit of securing academic well-being. Thirdly, I situate myself in a scholarship of African philosophy of higher education and show why such a philosophy of education is inextricably linked to the cultivation of academic well-being.
