Abstract

Freudâs assertion towards the close of Moses and Monotheism that âambivalence belongs to the essence of the father-son relationshipâ is an apt summary statement of Freudian psychoanalysis as a whole. Chapter 4 aims to explore this ambivalence in Freudâs own personal experience by considering how his relationship with his father was mediated in part by Jacob Freudâs citing of the Exodus account in his attempt to bring Freud back to the faith of the fathers, a restoration Freud clearly resisted (as evidenced, for example, in his very writing of Moses and Monotheism). That particular focus will open up into other interpretive sitesâShakespeareâs Hamlet, Michelangeloâs statue of Mosesâthrough which Freud tries in different ways to work through his ambivalence toward his father by claiming the right to author(ize) himself. As Freudâs last word, Moses and Monotheism might be said to mark his successful effort to overcome that ambivalence even as it hints at his need to believe that (the long deceased) Jacob Freud would continue to love a son who had replaced Mosaic law with the principles of psychoanalysis.
