The introduction lays out Freud’s goal of examining Judaism and Jewish history through the lens of trauma by analogy to the paintings of the Lithuanian-born Samuel Bak. Bak’s series Landscapes of Jewish Experience offers an extended meditation on whether it is possible to preserve the very idea of Jewish covenantal identity in the wake of the Holocaust. This issue will be revisited in the final section of the book (Coda 4) where it will be explored from the perspective of Freud’s own life.
