Abstract

While alternative forms of Japanese masculinities/femininities have emerged with cultural and social shifts, the unequal gender relation remains deeply rooted in Japan. To address the issue of gender equity, this chapter explores how youth engage with masculinities/femininities, especially through the practices of gender crossing. Employing Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts, I specifically examine how normative femininities/masculinities would be deterritorialized.

To examine bodies’ material experiences, I focus on theater performance in drama classes. Based on ethnographic research with high school students in Tokyo, I demonstrate how girls desire to embody masculinities, while boys strongly reject femininities.
