Abstract

The paper focuses on Tableau gÃ©nÃ©ral de la Perse moderne ou mÃ©moire gÃ©ographique, historique et politique sur la situation actuelle de cet Empireâan unpublished manuscript by Joseph Rousseau, a French diplomat and orientalist. Dated 1807 and kept in the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France, this document was compiled by NapolÃ©onâs order, and was supposed to give complete information about the situation in Persia, in regard with NapolÃ©onâs planned Indian campaign. Although the Indian expedition was not realized, the manuscript became an important document of its epoch. It consists of fourteen chapters and covers such aspects as history, geography, administrative decision, religion, traditions, art, Fath-Ali Shah and his circle, military potential, foreign relations, trade etc..
