The Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) has traditionally been determined using infrared thermometry. Over the last decade, thermal imaging via unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been used for this purpose. Recent advancements in ground-based phenotyping platforms now enable real-time CWSI assessment alongside the simultaneous measurement of various physiological and structural traits in crops. This study compares CWSI values obtained from a ground-based platform equipped with hemispherical artificial reference surfaces to those derived from UAV-based thermal imaging in a wheat breeding trial. The results reveal a strong correlation between the two methods, highlighting their complementary potential. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of integrating ground-based and UAV-based platforms for efficient high throughput water stress assessment in wheat breeding trials.
