This book examines the life, teachings, and practice methods of Honda Chikaatsu (1822-1889), clarifying their origins and discussing their impact and early dissemination, with particular focus on two important early proponents, the Shinto shrine priests Nagasawa Katsutate (1858-1940) and Miyagishima Kinsaku (1873-1921).
Hondaâs teachings and practice methods are collectively known as âSpiritual Learningâ (Reigaku). Honda touted his Spiritual Learning as constituting nothing less than a revival of authentic ancient Shinto. While this Spiritual Learning bore significant influence from National Learning (Kokugaku), it distinctively featured methods for the purification of the soul, spirit possession, divination, and ritual healing.
