This volume presents the first critical edition and English translation of Al-WÄridÄt waâl-TaqdÄ«sÄt (Divine Inspirations and Sanctifications) by ShihÄb al-DÄ«n YaḥyÄ al-SuhrawardÄ« (1154â1191), a Persianate founder of the Illuminationist (IshrÄqÄ«) school within the Islamic philosophy. Written in Arabic, the work blends visionary passages, ontological reflections, ethical counsel, and invocations to celestial beings. It reveals a lesser-known, more occult dimension of al-SuhrawardÄ«, complementing his reputation as philosopher and mystic. Rich with cryptic references to Illuminationist worship and spiritual rank which the author ascribed to himself, the text is analyzed by Åukasz PiÄ tak, who explores its structure, main ideas, and connections to al-SuhrawardÄ«âs better-known writings, while also assessing its authenticity and place within his corpus.
Åukasz PiÄ tak, Ph.D. (2019), University of Warsaw, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Arabic and Islamic studies at Adam Mickiewicz University in PoznaÅ. He has published articles and translations on Islamic and Judeo-Arabic philosophy and mysticism, including "Absent From Its World: The Image of the Fallen Soul in al-SuhrawardÄ«'s al-WÄridÄt wa-l-TaqdÄ«sÄt," in: Miriam L. Hjälm, Marzena Zawanowska (ed.), Strangers in the Land: Traveling Texts, Imagined Others, and Captured Souls in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Traditions in Late Antique and Mediaeval Times (Brill, 2024).
