This the first and only translation of the new (2023) Oxford edition of Aristotleâs Eudemian Ethics, which like that edition excludes the so-called âcommon booksâ. The main aim of the volume is to bring out the riches concealed beneath the surface of what is generally agreed to be a highly corrupt text; the new edition, based on a fresh collation by Rowe himself of the primary manuscripts, supersedes all previous editions, including the 1991 edition of Walzer and Mingay.
Christopher Rowe is Emeritus Professor of Greek at Durham University. He was made OBE in the Queenâs Birthday Honours in 2009 for his services to scholarship and was previously appointed H.O.Wills Professor of Greek at Bristol University. Prof. Rowe is also a founder member of the International Plato Society (1986-) and a past President of the Hellenic Society and of the Classical Association.
"The core of the book is obviously the translation itself, which follows on Roweâs translation of the Nicomachean Ethics in his collaboration with Sarah Broadie [...]. In addition to the translation itself, the volume contains a long and persuasively argued introduction and two appendices, both of them research papers from earlier in Roweâs career.[...] It should be obvious that anyone working on the Eudemian Ethics or, indeed, on Aristotleâs ethics in general should have this book at hand. Not only is the translation reliable and accessible [...], but the introduction provides a wonderfully thorough and judicious introduction to the problems one faces in handling the Eudemian Ethics."- Brad Inwood, Yale University, in: Bryn Mawr Classical Review
